Wind Powered Water Pump

A Tasmanian company has received a Clean Technology Innovation Program grant of $157,739 to develop a water pump that is entirely powered by wind energy.

Sedwyn Pty Ltd, which trades as SED Water Systems Australia, will use the funds to complete the development of a prototype.

Pumps are widely used in rural and regional Australia, but most use petrol, diesel or electricity. SED said that when it is developed and commercialized, the wind powered pump will be price competitive and provide a cleaner alternative.

The minister for Industry and Innovation, Greg Combet, said the project also has international potential.

The automated system comprises two separately locatable parts, the pump and the windmill. The windmill can be mounted on the top of a hill or where the wind is stronger while the pump can be in a bore or dam at the bottom or some distance away.

It can handle any type of water source and won't be damaged if the water source runs dry.

Using innovative blades, the windmill component will be easily and safely lowered to ground level for maintenance. This would address a safety issue with traditional windmills.

The $200 million Clean Technology Innovation Program provides grants of between $50,000 and $5 million to help innovative businesses develop new clean technologies.

SED Water Systems was established to market the fully automatic windmill water pumping system being developed by another part of the group, SED Manufacturing Services.

During the testing of the pumping system, an Aquatel wireless water level indicator was imported from New Zealand to monitor tank levels. The designer was impressed with the unit under difficult conditions and recommended that SED Water Systems become the Australian distributor for the indicators.

Director, Matthew Brown, said the SED Group has a 24 year history of innovations in food processing, mining and aquaculture. These include a shellfish grading systems sold internationally, an automated large scale whiskey distillery, and specialized hospital cleaning equipment.

SED Manufacturing Services designs and manufactures food processing equipment. SED Shellfish Equipment designs and markets shellfish processing equipment that is exported to many countries. SED Water Systems supplies pumping and control systems that use renewable energy.
