New Plastics Recycling Technology
A new technology called PolyWaste that can cost-effectively turn used
plastics including low grade plastics and film that go to landfill into
a substance that can be extruded into affordable but high quality products
is being commercialized by Newtecpoly Pty Ltd.
PolyWaste uses mechanical friction to heat and simultaneously melt and
mix used plastics so that mixed plastic wastes generally do not need thorough
washing, nor blending, drying, shredding, granulating or pelletizing before
treatment. This significantly reduces the handling and processing costs
that come from material preparation. The technology produces extrusion
ready plastics at an estimated processing cost of $400 per tonne, said
to be 60 per cent cheaper than conventional method that cost $1,000 per
tonne.
Newtecpoly seeks to provide large businesses with a recycling solution
that includes the ability to sell back to those companies finished plastic
products such as pallets, crates and bollards.
The company says that until now conventional approaches to collecting,
melting and reproducing plastics and making them eligible for extrusion
into new products have been laborious and inefficient. Due to cost, most
recyclable products are extruded and manufactured overseas, and if companies
in rural areas want to recycle plastics they are forced to transport the
waste to coastal ports to be sent off-shore.
Newtecpoly was co-conceived by NSW recycling and irrigation industry
participants Ross Collins of R&M Collins Pumps, Michael Ritchie of
Drums Go Round, and Colin Barker, the Deputy Chair of the Australian Industrial
Ecology Network. R&M Collins Pumps is said to be an industry leader
in agricultural irrigation and piping, while Drums Go Round is one of
the largest national service providers for the collection, transport,
shredding and processing of agricultural chemical drums.
Newtecpoly is seeking to raise $1,995,500 from sophisticated investors
in exchange for 15 per cent of the company. The capital raising is being
assisted by Tauro Capital Partners.
