Is this the Future for Tyre Recycling?

A company soon to list in ASSOB has developed patented and proven technology that addresses the major international problem of how to manage and recycle waste tyres.

Ecoflex Ltd has developed expertise in using recycled tyres in all types of civil engineering and construction projects, and has been recognized by the Global Tyre Recycling Association as having one of the world's best methods of tyre recycling. It also uses very little energy compared to other tyre recycling methods.

The Ecoflex Geomatrix Ground Stabilisation System turns old car and truck tyres into a range of building blocks and containment devices with the structural strength to be used in applications such as retaining walls, paving, concrete slabs and many other uses. The products have been proven in over 500 projects.

The tyres are used to a create robust and adaptable structural container that when filled with crushed rock, gravel, recycled concrete, sand or soil, forms a structural building block or containment device which is called the Ecoflex Unit. The Units can be combined in various designs to perform fundamental engineering functions in accordance with engineering standards and building codes. The designs and processes are patented as Ecoflex Systems.

Major applications are the E Wall, E Pave and E Rosion. The E Wall applications are as single, double and triple cells, reinforced earth, dam and pond embankments, and elevated erosion control. The E Pave usage is on unsealed roads and hardstands, sealed roads and pavements, trickle filter systems, and sporting fields. The E Rosion applications are for drainage channels, scour protection mats, sea walls, culverts, high water traffic, and drop structures.

The system can reduce construction costs by 15 to 25 per cent, and Ecoflex says it makes "a real contribution to sustainable development and improved environmental management".

Last year Ecoflex said that following acceptance of its technology by national and international civil construction firms, mining and energy companies and government bodies, it was time to ramp up marketing. It signed an exclusive agreement with Australian Business Development Pty Ltd, giving it a mandate to establish a global business and strategic plan for commercialization and expansion of the technology, beginning in Australia.

Prior to this, Ecoflex had focused on testing and proving its technology and overcoming what it said were prejudices from governments and industry about the use of a recycled product. But gaining support from organizations in the market has seen the technology widely acknowledged as a sustainable and valuable product.

Ecoflex plans to licence the use of its technology to the civil construction industry and design engineers in Australia and overseas in a staged expansion strategy.

The company commenced operating as Ecoflex in 1997and is based at Redhead near Newcastle in NSW.

Tony Puls of Commercial Syndications is assisting Ecoflex with its ASSOB listing and capital raising.
