Reducing Power Costs in Commercial Buildings

Launceston-based Definium Technologies has received a grant to help it develop technology to reduce the cost of power in commercial buildings.

The $134,135 grant is under the first round of the Federal Government's $200 million Clean Technology Innovation Fund.

"Definium has created an innovative energy monitoring and management system called the Mediator. It's designed to allow users of commercial buildings and facilities to better understand and identify their energy usage," said Geoff Lyons, the Federal Member for Bass.

"This system will be able to read and control separate systems in a building - such as heating and cooling, lighting, ventilation, alarms, refrigeration and monitoring - and can be linked to Mediators at other sites.

"The system will allow for more efficient optimization or load reduction, turning equipment down or off when required and therefore saving greenhouse gas emissions."

The Minister for Industry and Innovation, Greg Combet, said "Tasmania is leading the way in the clean energy race with around 40 per cent of Australia's renewable energy generated in the State. This grant will help Tasmania keep its edge in the clean energy economy and shows how with simple steps and smart, affordable technology you can drive down power costs, save money and reduce carbon emissions."

The $200 million Clean Technology Innovation Program provides grants of between $50,000 and $5 million. Applications are being accepted continuously.
